Support AB 300

The following letter was emailed to Nevada legislators today. It includes at the end a transcript of testimony given before a California legislative committee a decade ago by a motorcyclist who explains how wearing a helmet didn’t save her life, but ruined it. Very powerful.

Helmet Nannies Head for the Slopes!

On the day-before-the-eve of an Assembly Transportation Committee hearing on Assemblyman Don Gustavson’s (R-Reno) proposal to repeal Nevada’s mandatory motorcycle helmet law comes new calls for a mandatory ski helmet law following the death of actress Natasha Richardson in a skiing accident up in Canada.

Commanding General of the Nanny-State Army

A hearing on Assemblyman Don Gustavson’s (R-Reno) “Let Those Who Ride Decide” bill (AB 300) which would repeal Nevada’s mandatory motorcycle helmet law for adults is scheduled for this coming Tuesday before the Assembly Transportation Committee. And it’s rumored that a bureaucrat named Bill Gossard may testify against the bill at the hearing. Here are […]

Conservatives’ GOP Problem

Richard Viguerie is known as the “Funding Father” of the modern-day conservative movement for his pioneering success in harnessing the power of direct mail fundraising from millions of small-dollar donors in the 1970s and 1980s. So his thoughts on the current predicament conservatives find themselves in should be taken strongly into consideration.

Helmet Stats Just Don’t Add Up

A bill to repeal Nevada’s mandatory motorcycle helmet law was proposed in the 2007 Legislature. At a hearing on the bill, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that “witnesses said the typical traumatic head injury accident costs $2 million over the lifetime of the survivor and 50 such accidents would be expected a year in Nevada […]

Republicans Gone Bad

It’s bad enough that Republican Gov. Jim Gibbons broke his Tax Pledge to the citizens of Nevada by proposing the teachers union’s room tax hike in his budget, and that seven Republicans in the state Assembly – led by Assembly Minority Leader Heidi Gansert and Assistant Assembly Minority Leader Lynn “Bug Man” Stewart – along […]

Economics 101

Economist will tell you that you get more of what you subsidize and less of what you tax.

Don’t Let Emotion Trump Reason & Reality

Assembly Minority Leader Heidi Gansert (R-Reno) recently introduced a feel-good bill (AB 234) which would mandate DNA testing for anyone arrested – not convicted, mind you; arrested – on suspicion of a felony.

Another Gibbons Republican Backs Major Tax Hike

Gov. Jim Gibbons signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge promising to oppose and veto any and all efforts to increase taxes right before proposing the third largest tax increase in the state’s history and then refusing to veto it. Now, apparently following the governor’s lead, GOP Assemblyman John Carpenter, who also signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, […]

Let Those Who Ride Decide

“I disagree completely when government says that because of the number of head injuries from accidents with motorcycles that (a person) should be forced to wear a helmet,” declarethed Ronaldo Maximus many years ago. “I happen to think he’s stupid if he rides a motorcycle without a helmet, but that’s one of our sacred rights […]

Bill Watch

A pair of good conservative bills were introduced in the Nevada Legislature by Monday’s submission deadline.

nolan Knows the Nanny State

“Dennis, I hope you are not party to this obscene nanny state bill, that puts us one step closer to an absolute controlled POLICE STATE!!!” wrote Matt Walsh in an email to his state senator, dennis nolan, over a measure to make not wearing a seat belt a primary offense in Nevada.  “I do support […]

Burns Baby, Burns

In response to my call for Gov. Jim Gibbons to resign last week, gubernatorial communications director/press secretary Dan Burns had this to say to Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Molly Ball:

The Mis-Adventures of Li’l Nate

Some guy named Nathan Taylor wrote an email to legislative Republicans yesterday blasting me over my call for Gov. Gibbons to hand the keys to the Governor’s Mansion over to Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki. Nathan who? Oh, wait.  I remember that little whelp.

Some are Created More Equal than Others

“All but four members of Gov. Jim Gibbons’ staff will make a higher salary next fiscal year than what the Legislature approved for the current fiscal year, despite Gibbons’ proposal for all state workers to take a 6 percent pay cut,” reports Anjeanette Damon of Inside Nevada Politics.

Ah, What a Tangled Web He’s Weaved

According to Jon Ralston’s Flash e-newsletter, Gov. Jim Gibbons did an interview with Channel 8’s Gary Waddell in Las Vegas in which he said this about the teachers union’s 3 percent room tax hike bill: “I would never agree to being forced by a special interest group to earmark a certain amount of money for […]
