
9. Cougars
“Due to the expanding human population, cougar ranges increasingly overlap with areas inhabited by humans. Attacks on humans are very rare, as cougar prey recognition is a learned behavior and they do not generally recognize humans as prey. In June 2008, Reuters reported that “A mountain lion attacked, killed and partially ate a New Mexico man.” According to the story, the man-eating cat “dragged the man’s body a short distance into nearby woodland and ate and buried parts of it.” The story notes that there have been over 100 cougar attacks in North America since the late 19th century, “20 of them fatal.”
