Collins gets union boss to acknowledge right-to-work

Most people missed this exchange at the Clark County Commission this week, but one astute non-union contractor caught it. Clark County Commissioner Tom Collins: Men and women can [get hired through] the union halls without joining the union in Nevada? Union represenative: That could happen, yes. In other words, LEGALLY a construction worker can apply […]

How to fill a little $106 million budget gap

Out of a $15 billion budget, Democrats are having a cow over a projected budget shortfall error of $106 million and are demanding that Gov. Brian Sandoval fix the hole now rather than wait until May when there’s a good chance economic improvement will fill the gap when the Economic Forum releases its final estimate. […]

GOP back in charge, unemployment drops

Just one month after Republicans regained control of the House of Representatives and wiped out Harry Reid’s filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, the Wall Street Journal reports today that the unemployment rate fell to 8.9%, “the first time it dropped below 9% since April 2009.” But I’m sure that’s just a coincidence.

Heck adds to resume

Another feather in freshman Rep. Joe Heck’s cap. Today, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rodgers announced that Heck has been tapped to chair the House Intelligence Committee’s Technical and Tactical Intelligence Subcommittee. “Joe brings unique perspective to the Intelligence Committee as a whole,” said Rodgers. “That is especially true with technical and tactical issues. He […]

Ralston vs. NRPI: Round 7

Jon Ralston and the fiscal conservatives over at the Nevada Policy Research Institute (NRPR) are having a spirited Twitter exchange over taxes today. First Ralston tweeted that NPRI “still hates taxes (though proposed services tax).” NPRI responded that their services tax proposal was “revenue-neutral.” To which Jon responded, “My friends at @NevadaPolicyRI have a great […]

Newt, Mitt or the Dark Horse?

In suspending contracts with Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum yesterday, but not Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin, FOX News appears to be signaling that it believes Huck and Palin are definitely not serious about running for president, while Gingrich and Santorum certainly are. If, in fact, Huckabee and Palin, both of whom have very passionate […]

Heller Continues Assault on ObamaCare

U.S. Congressman Dean Heller (R-NV) continued his assault on ObamaCare today, advocating on the House floor for the repeal the onerous 1099 tax reporting provision. “Once the economic engine of this nation,” Heller told congressional colleagues, “small businesses are now buckling under the weight of onerous mandates and high taxes from a federal government that […]

“Tax My Meat” Pete Surrenders on Taxes

If you act stupidly…and you can’t fix stupid…then by definition you are stuck on stupid. Which brings us to another depressing Republican episode of “The Price is Right.”

“God Hates Fags,” but SCOTUS Loves Free Speech More

Members of the “God Hates Fags” Westboro Baptist Church are the most vile and disgusting creatures this side of dementors. And their vulgar protests (“Thank God for Dead Soldiers”) outside of funerals for fallen soldiers is a shocking affront to America’s collective conscience which hit raw nerves deeper than many of us even knew existed. […]

An Old Friend of Liberty Makes Good

Many of you old-timer conservative/GOP activists in Clark County will remember Mark Warden. He’s a dyed-in-the-wool limited government libertarian-conservative who left Nevada a few years ago to join the Free State Project – “an effort to recruit 20,000 liberty-loving people to move to New Hampshire…who agree to the political philosophy…that government exists at most to […]

Monopoly Pot Calls Competitor Kettles Black

“The Justice Department confirmed Monday that it is conducting an investigation into possible anticompetitive behavior in the parcel-delivery market,” the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. “United Parcel Service Inc. and FedEx Corp. both said in January that they were being investigated by the Justice Department.” Wait a minute. The United States government, which has […]

Spare the Tax Cuts; Spoil the Child

Some on the left and in the media have tried to undermine fiscal conservatism in the 2011 Legislature by criticizing Republicans for responding to every budget challenge with three simple words: “No new taxes.” But the left is doing the exact same thing; it’s just that their three simple words are: “Gimme, gimme, gimme!” It’s […]

WWE ramping up for wrasslin’ Super Bowl

What?!! I travel out-of-town for one week and return to find out The Rock is back and picking a fight with John Cena; Teddy Long is back and fired both Dolf Ziggler and Vicky Guerrero; and both the Undertaker AND Triple H are back and picking a fight with each other? You know what that […]

A Sneak Peak into What’s Possibly in Sandoval’s Voucher Proposal

Dale Erquiaga, senior adviser to Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, discussed new details of the administration’s school voucher proposal at his weekly press conference on today; however, as the Nevada News Bureau reports, “The governor’s office has only submitted a request that legislative employees draft the bill. That means there is not yet bill language for […]

Who’s NFIB Gonna Call? Ghostbusters!

According to a poll conducted by the Nevada chapter of NFIB, “Should one element of ObamaCare be held legal, Nevada small-business owners, by a slim majority, prefer the state design its own health-care exchange rather than have one created for it by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services.” This is, essentially, the same […]

Making it cheap & easy for tax-hikers to hike taxes?

On the matter of Nevada legislative Democrats voting to put a tax hike on the ballot in 2012, Republican state Sen. James Settelmeyer (R-Minden) is quoted in the LVRJ as saying, “If you want to take a tax package to the people and they want to vote on it, that is their decision.” Except…there’s more […]

Dull-Witted Johnny O Touts Nitwit Professor

When it comes to simple-minded, dull-witted tweets, this one today by Assembly Speaker John Oceguera takes the prize: “LV SUN: Gutting schools, infrastructure won’t make #NV a better place 2 live, nor a better place 2 start a firm.” Duh. Really? Of course, that’s not what’s happening in Nevada at all. This is just more […]
