16.) Cruz was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to replace retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson in 2012.
In one of the “biggest upsets” of that election cycle, fueled by the tea party movement, he defeated wealthy then-Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, who spent over $20 million of his own money on the campaign, in the GOP primary. Cruz is the first Hispanic U.S. senator from Texas.
