Republican Assembly Minority Leader Pat Hickey issued a rather eye-brow raising directive to his troops this week; advising legislative candidates that if they cross his self-imposed line on negative campaigning in the primary they won’t receive his or the GOP caucus’ support in the general election vs. the Democrats.
Hmm. Building a majority by subtraction rather than addition? You know, it’s just crazy enough to work!
Look, I understand the well-meaning intent by Assembly Leader Hickey here…but speech control, even by Republican leaders in Republican primaries, isn’t a good idea. If a candidate goes too far, the voters will pass judgment and impose sentence.
Let the fur start flying!
