Muth’s Truths: April 24, 2017

I don’t know if you can call a dog a “lemon” like you can with a car, but if so, my daughter Jenna appears to have gotten one with Prancer.

As longtime readers know, Prancer contracted cancer in her right hind leg last summer.  Jenna set up a GoFundMe account and raised the money necessary for the amputation and chemo treatments.

The good news is: Seven months later and the ol’ gal is still cancer-free!

The bad news is she developed arthritis and hip dysplasia in the other leg.  So on Friday, the vet scheduled her for surgery today to relieve the pain.

The doc has never done this type of surgery on an amputee before, and it would be a longshot that Prancer would ever be able to walk again.  But Jenna said she was willing to make the sacrifice even if it means she’d have to physically slip a harness (as seen in accompanying photo taken at the vet’son Friday) under her several times a day to hold her up and take her outside to do her business during the 8-week recovery period.

Alas, on Saturday night, it was clear Prancer was in considerable pain, and Gia and Jenna took her to the Emergency Animal Hospital.

They checked her out yesterday morning and called with the bad news. Some kind of neurological problem developed and the poor dog’s remaining leg was completely paralyzed.  Even the surgery wouldn’t be able to fix it.

So yesterday afternoon we had to make the excruciatingly painful decision to put Prancer down.  Our only solace is that it wasn’t the cancer that got her. Prancer kicked cancer’s butt!

Jenna, of course, is having a tough time with the loss…as you can understand.  I’m sure she’d appreciate some supportive emails from folks who have been through this sort of pain themselves.  Her email is jennamuth01@gmail.com.  Thanks, everyone.

P.S.  While lame-o Democrats in Carson City have wasted time talking about a silly bill to rename McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas after former Sen. Harry Reid, a far more serious discussion on airport infrastructure projects is going on in Washington, DC.

And any discussion of infrastructure spending necessarily demands a discussion on how to fund that spending.

With that in mind, let’s discuss briefly the difference between a “tax” and a “user fee” – as liberals LOVE to call certain taxes “fees” in order to avoid being accused of raising taxes.

Two GREAT columns in yesterday’s Las Vegas Review-Journal.

First, Elliot Malin of Americans for Prosperity explains how Nevada’s Democrat-controlled Legislature this session blew an opportunity to spur employment and entrepreneurship, especially in the minority and low-income communities, by killing a bill that would have rolled back some of the many absolutely absurd “occupational licenses” required in Nevada.  You can read it by clicking here.
